Newtown has got to be one of the most trendy and eclectic places to be in Sydney, well known for its out-of-the-ordinary vibe. From the diverse range of cafes, book shops, restaurants and music stores, to the art-cinema and specialty tea shop, Newtown has it all.
When Stephen and I went to King Street recently, we were doing some Christmas shopping. Before long we were craving sustenance, and after searching up and down the street we came across a menu we liked at Grub and Tucker.
The restaurant's decor seems to mirror the atmosphere of the suburb: the walls are painted a bright, warm yellow, wood carvings and paintings adorn the walls, charmingly mismatched light fixtures hang from the ceiling, and even the tables are carved and painted. There is a shady courtyard outside, perfect for eating out in the summer (or winter, if you're game!).
There were only two staff members in the entire restaurant at the time, alternating between cooking and serving, so we were asked to find a seat and look over the menu, which wasn't much of a hardship. Even the menu was rustic and charming, and we had chosen what we wanted to eat in no time.
The antipasto platter had a lot going on for just $17. There were solid wedges of blue, brie and danish feta cheese, plump and juicy olives, beautifully sweet pickled capsicum and bell peppers, and some dips including a sort of raisin compote, basil pesto, a spicy tomato salsa, and cucumber dip. Accompanied by water crackers and deliciously soft bread, this was a delicious start to our meal.
Stephen tried the grilled chicken burger, and loved it! A good sized chicken breast fillet, grilled to juicy perfection and served on a softer-than-soft, floury bun with mayo and a peri-peri sauce. The chips were cooked until just crispy, and served perfectly seasoned with salt, and the salad of mixed lettuce leaves, tomato, and cucumber was fresh and cool.
Soup of the Day (Carrot and Coriander) - $12
The soup of the day turned out to be carrot and coriander, and the combination was exquisite. The warm, thick texture and simple, rustic flavour of the carrot is enhanced by the fresh notes that the coriander brings to the dish. Served with a warm, delicious panini and softened butter, it was irresistible!
Grub and Tucker is a unique little find in the heart of Newtown, and don't let the exterior fool you - inside is a haven of delicious food at great prices.
